Since we started this journey of opening a boutique inn in a historic Victorian home in Stoughton, Wisconsin, the question we’ve been asked most often is: what’s the meaning behind “Goose Crown”?
It’s a tricky thing to answer, because we’ve never had a precise one-to-one definition. For us, a name is something to be interpreted. It’s meant to evoke a feeling or a vision more than a literal explanation, and we believe a name’s meaning is ultimately defined by the audience — in this case, our guests and our community in Stoughton and beyond.
But as for how we landed on it? For us personally, “Goose Crown” broadly evoked the idea of a Nordic fairy tale that hasn’t been fully written yet. We love the tales of the Grimm brothers and Hans Christian Andersen, and wanted something of their magic to be associated with the home. But in terms of what the name means for the guest experience, if we had to put words to the feeling we were looking to evoke, it would probably come closest to: cozy luxury.
Not luxury in the stuffy sense. More like being thoughtfully cared for. Pampered without being precious. Elevated, but still of this earth.
When we travel ourselves, the places that stick with us the most are not the five-star resorts. It’s not always the biggest room or the highest thread count that make a lasting impression. It’s the places that feel intentional. Places where you can feel that someone thought deeply about the guest experience. Places with personality. Places that make you feel somehow at home from the moment you arrive.
That spirit became the foundation for the Goose Crown Inn.
A Crowning Place in History
The “Crown” part of the name speaks partly to the property itself — this beautiful historic home built by Jens Naeset, its heritage, and its place in the story of Stoughton. It’s always felt like an heirloom that belongs, at least in part, to the town. But it also reflects the feeling we want guests to experience while they’re here: cared for, considered, maybe even a little spoiled from time to time.
That might mean a jar of bath salts waiting beside the tub in your room. Or apothecary drawers in the hallway, stocked with things you may have forgotten at home. It might mean discovering a record player in your room, with LPs from Wisconsin and Norwegian artists lining the walls, for guests visiting town for a show at the Opera House.
We believe everyone deserves a little regal treatment now and again.
So then, what about the Goose?
Again we don’t have a perfect 1:1 explanation here — but if we had to name it, the “Goose” element keeps the whole brand from becoming too weighty. This isn’t actually a place for royalty. It’s a haven for real people who just want a little escape from the noise of the everyday.
And to be fair, maybe there is a little something special for us about these particular waterfowl — something personal. Over the years, during our many visits to Stoughton to visit family, we grew unexpectedly fond of the beautiful Canada geese that gather around the lakes, ponds, and the Yahara River. Sometimes graceful, sometimes not, they became integral to the experience of being in Southern Wisconsin for us, their gentle honks a soothing soundtrack to let us know we really weren’t in Los Angeles anymore.
And curiously enough, as we worked through the detailed process of dreaming up the inn and eventually taking on stewardship of the Naeset Roe House here in Stoughton, the geese seemed to appear at every major turning point. Whenever we hit a speed bump, or cleared a milestone, a handful of our feathered friends would soar past overhead with some encouraging honks echoing through the winter air.
We chose to believe they were cheering us on — and not telling us to turn around and head back to L.A.!
Those small moments became oddly meaningful to us. They made us smile, and reminded us not to take ourselves too seriously. They reminded us that beauty and joy often come from the unexpected things that repeat themselves quietly over time.
Launching the Goose Crown
As we open our doors to our first guests, our long-term hope is that the Goose Crown Inn comes to be a place known for being thoughtful, welcoming, a little magical, and deeply human.
But likely it will come to mean something different for everyone who walks through the doors, as they write their own fairy tales within these walls and beyond.
That’s the beauty of a name.
